AHRA April 2026 Quick Credit - The credit earned from the Quick Credit (TM) test accompanying this article may be applied to the AHRA Operations Management (OM), Asset Management (AM) domains.

April 22, 2026 - Laura Coombs, Tessa S. Cook, Paige Nierengarten

Healthcare systems are moving fast to deploy medical imaging AI for triage, detection, workflow orchestration, and reporting support. Yet after initial go‑lives, many organizations discover gaps in governance, acceptance testing, and ongoing performance surveillance, areas where traditional picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), radiology information systems (RIS), and quality infrastructures were never designed to help.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) now offers two complementary resources to close those gaps: the ACR Recognized Center for Healthcare‑AI (ARCH‑AI), a recognition program that operationalizes best practices for safe, effective AI use; and Assess‑AI, a National Radiology Data Registry program that continuously monitors real‑world AI performance and benchmarks it against national peers. Together, these programs provide a life cycle approach to AI management spanning procurement, local validation, deployment, monitoring, and assessment.

This article also examines the governance challenges associated with AI adoption and outlines how structured oversight models can mitigate risk and support sustainable innovation in imaging departments.

May 12, 2026 - Wendy Renneke, FAHRA, Whitney Utt

In this episode of Medical Imaging Matters, AHRA Executive Director Jason Newmark is joined by Whitney Utt, president of the Association for Radiology and Imaging Nursing (ARIN), and Wendy Renneke, diagnostic imaging manager at Seattle Children’s Hospital and AHRA board member.

The group dives into what collaboration between nurses and technologists really looks like in practice, across CT, MRI, interventional radiology, recovery areas, and beyond. Whitney and Wendy share powerful real-world examples where nurse–technologist partnerships shine brightest, especially during high-pressure moments like contrast reactions, MRI safety concerns, and rapid patient deterioration. These stories underscore why strong relationships, built long before a crisis, matter so much.

The episode wraps with an enthusiastic look at AHRA’s new partnership with ARIN — a collaboration rooted in the belief that imaging leaders and imaging nurses are better together. With joint programming planned for the AHRA Annual Meeting and a shared focus on education, connection, and multidisciplinary leadership, this partnership marks an exciting step forward for both communities.

    AHRA May 2026 Quick Credit

May 20, 2026 - Dr. William Undie, Deralyn Miller, Aziz Benamar, Habib Tannir, Dr. Diane C. Bodurka, Dr. Kimberly Hoggatt Krumwiede, Dr. Peter Hu

The United States is experiencing persistent shortages of allied health professionals, particularly in medical imaging, where demand continues to outpace the supply of qualified technologists. To address this challenge, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center established the Student Talent Advancing Retention Success (STARS) program, a collaborative initiative between the School of Health Professions and the Division of Diagnostic Imaging Services.

Designed as a workforce retention pathway, the program integrates students into UT MD Anderson’s culture and operations through part-time roles, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

Launched in 2022, STARS has demonstrated significant operational and financial impact. The program achieved 100% graduate retention, reduced the hiring cycle from 120 to 6 days, and surpassed productivity and procedure benchmarks. The financial outcomes have shown that the revenue generated through clinical productivity and operational efficiency effectively offset the program’s associated expenses, confirming its fiscal sustainability.

Fluoroscopic examinations have declined over the last several decades. This review investigates the benefits and limitations of fluoroscopy and the procedures and modalities that have led to their decline. The literature suggests multiple limitations with fluoroscopy were identified, with few benefits. Furthermore, this review discusses fluoroscopic procedures in conjunction with other modalities, and what led to the decline in fluoroscopy examinations.

With the continual rise of AI in society, it is fitting to examine the role AI has played in medical imaging. AI is described as machines imitating cognitive functions naturally applied by humans. Used in medical imaging for decades, the benefits of AI in medical imaging include image interpretation, image reconstruction, reduction in radiation dose, and improved image quality. As with any technology, AI in medical imaging is accompanied by its own unique considerations, including ethical concerns. Ethical issues with AI in medical imaging include explainability, transparency, accuracy, privacy, generalizability, trust, accountability, oversight, patient and societal well-being, fear of radiologist replacement, responsibility, and legality. The reliability of AI in image diagnosis, lack of transparency, the black box phenomenon, and patient confidentiality concerns are of particular importance for medical imaging. Given these
concerns a regulatory framework is necessary to ensure AI is used in an ethical manner.
