CMS Plans to Improve Radiation Safety and Image Quality in CT. Are You Prepared?

Recorded On: 06/14/2023

Ehsan Samei, PhD, DABR, FAAPM, FSPIE, FAIMBE, FIOMP, FACR

CMS is planning to add a new metric to their Inpatient Quality Reporting for excessive radiation dose and inadequate image quality in diagnostic CT. This presentation will present what information is needed to meet the proposed CMS measure and what tools are available to gather this information. This is presented within a more holistic strategy and framework to achieve patient-informed consistency in the practice of medical imaging. This strategy is built upon deploying patient-centered metrics of radiation dose and image quality, individualized per patient, monitoring their levels, and putting in place actionable means to improve their levels across practice.

Dr. Samei is the Reed and Martha Rice Distinguished Professor, Chief Imaging Physicist, and director of Center for Virtual Imaging Trials at Duke University. Author of over 350 referred papers, he is a clinical physicist and an imaging scientist aiming to bridge the gap between scientific scholarship and clinical practice through patient-centric imaging and translational research. His research focuses on virtual clinical trials, quantitative imaging, and in vitro and in vivo metrologies.
